About Us

Grimes County, located in Southeast Texas, is a place where small-town charm meets natural beauty. With a population of almost 30,000 people, it offers a close-knit community feel that welcomes visitors with open arms.

One of the most notable aspects of Grimes County is its rich history. It was founded in 1846 from a portion of Montgomery County and named after Jesse Grimes, a Texas Revolution veteran and signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. The county seat is Anderson and is the home of the historic Grimes County Courthouse built in 1893.  The entire town of Anderson and surrounding areas has been recognized as the Anderson Historic District and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. The area was originally settled during Spanish colonial rule. The town is unusual in that a large number of structures have survived that reflect the history of Texas from the Mexican period through the years of the Republic of Texas and into early statehood. Some buildings within the district are listed as Texas State Antiquities Landmarks or Recorded Texas Historic Landmarks. The town of Anderson was founded by Henry Fanthorp when he built his Stagecoach Inn in 1834.  The town of Anderson was named after Texas Vice President Kenneth Anderson who died at the Fanthorp Inn in 1845.

Today, visitors can explore this history by visiting landmarks such as the Fanthorp Inn, Texas Renaissance Festival, Navasota Blues Alley, Bernhardt Winery, the Anderson Historic District, and the LaSalle Statue in Navasota. The French explorer René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle came through the area that would become Navasota in 1687, where he was murdered by one of his men. La Salle's bones are believed to have found their resting place in Navasota.

Navasota was founded by European Americans in 1831 as a stagecoach stop. In 2012, Navasota was named "Train Town USA". Navasota is known for its famous Railroad Street and fabulous Victorian homes with several operating Bed and Breakfast homes.  Navasota was once the home of the infamous Frank Hamer who was the city Marshall in the 1900’s and is known as the man who killed Bonnie and Clyde. Every year Navasota hosts the Texas Birthday Bash and the Texas Blues Festival.  Navasota also has a golf course at Pecan Lakes Golf Club and a municipal airport for small private planes and jets.
