Environmental Services

The Grimes County Environmental Services Division plays a focused role in protecting public health by overseeing the installation, permitting, and inspection of on-site sewage facilities (septic systems) within county boundaries. Its responsibility is to ensure that these systems are designed, installed, and maintained in compliance with state regulations to prevent wastewater contamination of soil and groundwater. However, its authority is limited specifically to septic system oversight and trash dumped in the County right of way; it does not regulate broader environmental issues, create policy, provide waste or water utility services, or manage large-scale environmental programs. Instead, the department serves as a local enforcement and compliance body within this narrow scope, supporting safe residential and commercial development while coordinating as needed with state agencies such as the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).
